The Tangalooma Wrecks make for an unusual anchorage that is easy to get to from within Moreton Bay. Fifteen old ships- primarily barges & dredges, were sunk in 1963 in an attempt to form a more protected anchorage on the west side of Moreton Island. Over the years they've disintegrated enough that they don't really offer a great deal or protection, but in light, prevailing conditions, this is a fun, attractive anchorage. The easiest approach is from the south, using the range marked on the chart. Anchor anywhere to the south or behind the line of wrecks in approx 30-40 feet. There is a yellow buoyed box on the northern side of the wrecks that is used as a turning basin for the car ferry. Tangalooma Resort is friendly to boaters. There are trails, great long beaches, swimming and of course snorkeling or diving the wrecks. The water is clear & beautiful. Most of Moreton Island is park.

Features
  • Great firm, long beaches for walking
